Danny, Jelly Roll and the Dirty Dozen

I’m looking forward to my interview with Fred Kasten at the upcoming Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, on Sunday, March 20 at noon, at the New Orleans Jazz Museum, 400 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans. I got to know Mr. Barker, the master musician, historian and irrepressible storyteller, through the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (he appeared on two of the records we made together), and he remains an inspiration to me today. Here is the program’s description of the event:

Grammy-winning producer Scott Billington will discuss his forthcoming book, Making Tracks: A Record Producer’s Southern Roots Music Journey, with Fred Kasten. Billington will read selections that deal with studio sessions with Danny Barker as he worked on two recordings with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Jelly and The New Orleans Album. Billington will also play taped highlights of his interviews with Barker from those sessions.
